You Don't Always Have To Go Hard

Saturdays are my long run day. I have been slowly building in both mileage and time over the last 3 months. My plan for yesterday was to run a route that was a little over 7 miles. That was until my son woke up at 11:30 pm Friday night and started vomiting. He then had one vomiting episode every hour until about 6 am.

Safe to say my plan to wake up early and go for a run went out the window. I instead opted to sleep and move my run to later in the day. By the time I got to my run, I knew that my plan to run 7 miles was going to have to change.

Instead, I opted for an out-and-back route that would give me some flexibility in how far I could run. My goal had changed to 5 miles but I knew I could turn back at any time and keep that lower if needed. I also ran slow instead of trying to push the pace.

By the end of it, I felt pretty good and accomplished the goal which was to run 5 miles.

I finished 5.02 miles in 52:16 a 10:24 pace.

The point is not every day needs to be a ma effort workout. Even on the days, you plan to go hard you may need to back off due to circumstances out of your control.

This day didn't go as planned but I got a lot of quality work out of it and it was way better than skipping the run altogether.

On a side note, my goal was to run 40+ miles in October. I will finish with 42.8! Each month the running is feeling better and better. I haven't decided yet but I will probably shoot for a similar distance next month. That is unless I want to swap out a strength day for another run day.

Until next time,

Coach Ben
