CrossFit, in my opinion, is the best form of exercise if you are looking to improve GPP (general physical preparedness) or as I like to call it "get in shape for everyday life". The cool thing about CrossFit is it exposes you to all different forms of exercise that you otherwise wouldn't know ever have heard of. Whether it is Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, or even obstacle course racing some if not all are probably brand new to most people. In the beginning, everything is exciting but as you do each movement more and more you are naturally drawn to one that you find more exciting and may want to improve at quicker than your other areas of fitness.
Don't let people discourage you from potentially specializing in one area or another if that is what you are interested in and enjoy doing. For me, I was immediately drawn to Olympic weightlifting and set specific goals for the snatch and clean and jerk that I wanted to hit. I knew I wasn't going to hit those goals if I snatch once every 6 weeks. I need to snatch every week and follow a program that was designed to get me to my goals. Did I sacrifice in other areas? Absolutely. At first, it bugged me when people would look down on me because I didn't do CrossFit 5 days a week but after a while, I ignored those people and realized that this is what was fun for me and that this is what I enjoyed doing for fitness.
I have since adapted my training schedule to be a bit more balance but that was completely by my choice and because my goals changed. At the end of the day, it is your fitness journey so set some goals, pick a program that will help you attain your goals, and have FUN!
